A Cheerful Lunch
by Biola Olatunde
the elders warn
don’t whistle at high noon
nor call any by name
for the spirits are about
to prepare their dinner
he sniffed and sneered
at the ignorant elders and traditions
and headed for the farm
alone at high noon
saw no one nor animal
hair stood at right angles
head swelled
and trembling slightly
to dispel the sudden dread
he whistled to himself
the Iroko spirit
along the path smiled and thought
what a cheerful lunch
don’t whistle at high noon
nor call any by name
for the spirits are about
to prepare their dinner
he sniffed and sneered
at the ignorant elders and traditions
and headed for the farm
alone at high noon
saw no one nor animal
hair stood at right angles
head swelled
and trembling slightly
to dispel the sudden dread
he whistled to himself
the Iroko spirit
along the path smiled and thought
what a cheerful lunch
