Puerto Rico's Dysfunctional Department of Education

Puerto Rico's Dysfunctional Department of Education

I don't normally like complaining about work on Knight Chills, but since I do like writing about real life horror, I decided this rant is somewhat appropriate.
While I admire my peers working in the states and abroad for being able to do wonders with their students, I must admit, I'm miffed at our Department of Education here in Puerto Rico. For starters, they don't allocate enough money in the budget for classroom resources. Instead, the powers that be have been giving expensive contracts to their political buddies. The fact that those contracts tendered this year have proven a waste of time and money, yet it hasn't stopped them from continuing this unsavory practice, proves that the DE, like the rest of the government run organizations is completely dysfunctional.
Another thing that irks me is the fact that teacher pensions are unstable. There may not be a pension by the time I retire. Also, our DE wants us to use differentiated strategies, which are much needed everywhere, except, I and many of my colleagues don't have the resources, not to mention we are at least twenty to thirty thousand dollars a year underpaid.
Of course, I understand that some of you are probably wondering why I don't pack it up and leave this island. Well, my family is here. Plus, I'd like to be part of the education revolution that must occur if Puerto Rico is going to compete worldwide. For that to happen, teachers like me should have the basics, like internet in the classroom, computers or laptops that work all year round, and a diverse amount of resources so that our students can finally enter into the world the U.S. students have known for the last twenty-five years. Yes, many of our schools lack the proper foundation for success and for what I have seen, politicians are throwing all the burden on us teachers. Surely it takes a community to educate our children, so why should things be so dysfunctional in Puerto Rico?
As proof of a dysfunctional society, I only have to direct you to the news sources. Gun violence brought on by drug turf wars are far too common in this island. Poverty is rampant. Unemployment hit new highs, and government corruption is stuck in a never-ending loop with no end in sight.
President Obama, I implore that you send an independent investigator to the Puerto Rico's Department of Education. You promised a change we could count on, yet the changes I have seen on this island, regarding education, have us headed back to cave man days. It's time to get your hands dirty, Mr. President, and stop ignoring us second-class citizens. That's right, upon moving to Puerto Rico, I lost the right to vote for President. Clearly, the political system here and in the U.S. has severe cracks that must be patched up before more people migrate to other countries.
Perhaps, migration has been the plan all along. God knows many of our citizens have abandoned this sinking ship. How long before Americans decide enough is enough? How long before the people of Puerto Rico decide that a violent coup is needed here? Help us, Mr. President, before it's too late.

Beheading the Beheader

Beheading the Beheader
by Nomar Knight

I came across a tweet today where someone suggested beheading Muslims who don't believe in Jesus Christ. While I in no way applaud the barbaric idea, I do appreciate the right to express an opinion, no matter how insane others may deem it.

Now, I don't want to debate the notion of religion and what people believe or don't believe. However, I do think the proposal was made out of anger because of recent terrorist events in France. With that in mind, I don't see how wanting to commit an irrational act as a response to insanity would follow the teachings of the Christ. Which is obviously my point. I wonder if I'll ever see the day that human beings stop thrashing each other and just respect their differences. Would we add fuel to fire to put it out? Then the notion of beheading the beheader is a bad idea. Though as a horror writer, it serves as a good writing prompt.

In summation, beheading anyone in real life for any reason is a terrible idea. Beheading an  executioner in a work of fiction...might be something I'll want to read about. How about you?

Catch you on the dark side.

Real Horror Strikes Again: 8 Notorious Criminals

Guest post by Hazel Taylor of Criminal Justice Degrees Guide.

The 8 Most Notorious Criminals in Hollywood History

Hollywood may be the land of big dreams and promises, but this place definitely sees its fair share of tragedies as well. From crimes of passion to money-motivated crimes, Hollywood criminals have been known to attack for any and all reasons. And we all know that one of the quickest ways to be a show stealer in Hollywood is to do something bad. Here are the eight most notorious criminals in Hollywood history.
  1. Paul Snider

Paul Snider is the man responsible for killing his actress and Playboy model wife, Dorothy Stratten, before turning the gun on himself. The high-profile murder-suicide was a complete shock to Hollywood. The young Stratten had just been named Playboy’s Miss August 1979 and 1980 Playmate of the Year and landed a spot in Bob Fosse’s film Star 80. This increased level of fame caused her husband-manager, Paul Snider, to become increasingly jealous and bitter. On Aug. 14, 1980, Snider brutally shot and killed 20-year-old Stratten in their Los Angeles apartment and then committed suicide.
  2. Amy Fisher

Amy Fisher, also known as the "Long Island Lolita," was the infamous teenager responsible for nearly killing her then-boyfriend Joey Buttafuoco’s wife, Mary Jo, in 1992. Fisher was 16 years old when she began a relationship with the New York auto body shop owner and it didn’t take long before she wanted to get his wife out of the picture. On the afternoon of the shooting, Fisher had an accomplice drive her to the Buttafuoco’s home so that she could kill Mary Jo. When his wife answered the door, Amy lied and told her that Joey was having an affair with her younger sister. Mary Jo turned away in disbelief and Fisher shot her in the head and fled the scene. Mary Jo miraculously lived through the shooting, but suffered partial paralysis on one side of her face and a loss of hearing in one ear. Fisher was eventually arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison for attempted murder, and Joey served six months for statutory rape.
  3. Paul and Tom Ferguson

Paul and Tom Ferguson were the murderous brothers responsible for killing the famous silent movie star, Ramon Novarro, in 1968. On the night of his murder, Novarro invited the Ferguson brothers over to his house in hopes of having sex with one of the two men. The Fergusons believed that the actor had a large sum of money hidden inside the house, and planned to find it. After the rendezvous between Paul and Ramon was over, the brothers demanded that he give them the money. When Novarro said he didn’t have any money on him, Paul brutally beat him and left him to die. Police were able to trace a call that Tom made on the house phone to his girlfriend in Chicago on the day of the murder. She ratted them out and the brothers were arrested and sentenced to life in prison, but were paroled within seven years of the trial.
  4. OJ Simpson

OJ Simpson is one of the most notorious criminals in Hollywood. Although he was famously acquitted in the high-profile murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, in 1995, the former professional football player and actor did get arrested and imprisoned for another set of crimes. In 2007, Simpson was arrested after he and a group of armed men robbed a room in a Las Vegas hotel-casino and stole sports memorabilia from a dealer. Simpson was convicted on 12 charges, including armed robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault, and kidnapping and was sentenced to a maximum of 33 years in prison with a possibility of parole in nine years.
  5. Robert Bardo

The tragic murder of 21-year-old My Sister Sam star Rebecca Schaeffer became one of the biggest crime stories in Hollywood history. Robert Bardo, 19, was the crazed fan who took the actress’ life. Bardo was obsessed with Schaeffer and began writing her love letters to get her attention. She wrote him back and the two corresponded through mail for months. On July 18, 1989, Bardo went to Schaeffer’s home after tracking it down from an Arizona detective agency and shot her in the chest and fled the scene. Bardo was ratted out by a family member who informed police that he told her he was going to visit the actress that day. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and is serving a life sentence.

The Burning: A Modern Witch Story

The Burning: A Modern Witch Story
By Nomar Knight

Kegani had just finished cleaning a cowshed when she heard the shaman’s deep voice behind her.  “Witch, you must die!”
She turned to see men and women waiting behind the shaman.  Each person glared at her.
“What are you talking about?”
Her question infuriated the shaman.  “Bring her!”
Two of the men grabbed Kegani by her arms and attempted to drag her out of the cowshed.  The feisty woman managed to kick one in his knee and bolted through the door only to be met by the others.  She stopped when spotting a ten-year-old boy.
With lips trembling, she raised her hand to defend herself.  The boy slung a rock, striking the side of her head.  The others joined in on the stoning while chanting a chorus of “The witch must die!”
She screamed, finding momentary relief upon hearing the shaman’s order.  “Enough!”
In spite of the spinning terrain, she tried to rise only to fall back to the ground.  She tasted her own blood as rivulets entered through the corner of her open mouth.  Kegani struggled for breath.
“Tie her up!”  The shaman led the hostile crowd to a nearby oak tree.  Two men lifted Kegani and dragged her through the sharpened stones, slamming her back against the tree.
Through heavy breaths, Kegani said, “I have done nothing.  Why do you call me a witch?”
The shaman drew close to the battered woman until his nose touched hers.  “You gave Leilani a potion.  She’s very sick and may not live through the day.  Witchcraft is not tolerated in this tribe.”
“No, you’re mistaken.  I did no such thing.”
When the shaman stepped back, she saw one of the men carrying a lit torch.  She also spotted the boy tossing a rock in the air, his lips curling into a sly smile.
She screamed when another man doused gasoline on twigs and over her body.
As the shaman chanted a spell to ward off evil, she recalled that Leilani had vowed to steal what was most precious to her.  Leilani wanted to marry Kegani’s fiancĂ©.
The shaman said, “Leilani managed to tell her mother that you gave her a potion because of your jealousy.”  He took the torch and lit the twigs that were below her feet.  Flames quickly consumed her dress.
“No!”  Kegani’s screams eventually faded with the rising sun.
As Kegani’s soul travelled to the next realm, she couldn’t help but wonder how it was possible for anyone to get killed for being an alleged witch, even in these modern times.

Author’s Note: as with many of my stories, this story was inspired by real events.  Check out the link to the CNN report here.

Vicious Cycle

Vicious Cycle
By Nomar Knight

Help!
I'm trapped
In a bubble of Silence
With no escape
In sight
No way out

Please!
Find a way
To shut out solitude
Guide me
Towards
Pure freedom

Now!
Thousands pounding
Stampeding and bleeding
Senseless violence
Greed
Endless weeping

Hurry!
Create a solution
Maddening cries
Hungry eyes
Die
Lack of food

Shit!
Tired of hearing
Empty promises
False hope
Lingers
Nothing changes

Help!
We're caught
In a vicious cycle
Power hungry
Fools
Control everything

Listen to the Voices

Marilyn K. Yee, The New York Times

Listen to the Voices
By Nomar Knight

Back in the 90’s, I used to work for an Armored Truck company which focused on payroll distribution.  One day one of the routes was short a man, so my boss thought since I was a supervisor, it’d be good to have me report back on any irregularities, if any, on the run.
I recalled driving the armored van and as I obeyed the crew's suggestion to park the vehicle on the sidewalk, against the building, a tingling sensation began to stir in my gut.  While I waited for the crew to go upstairs to cash checks for a company, I watched the people as they went about their business.  I recalled visiting the World Trade Center’s observation deck and being awed by how vehicles looked like insects.
Being at ground level was supposed to make me feel safer.  Unfortunately, the tingling sensation got worse.  I was tempted to leave the van and break out in a full out sprint.  I didn’t know what caused me to feel so anxious, but all I knew was that I needed to get my crew out of there.
As soon as I spotted the crew, a sense of relief began to calm me.  Imagine my surprise when the same guard who suggested I park next to the building’s wall, announced for me to wait while they fetched their lunch.  At that moment, I became a tyrant and screamed obscenities.  The men stood in shock while I unleashed a barrage of cusses, reminding them of my rank of supervisor.  I ordered them back in the truck and announced that lunch would be acquired on the Westside.
I couldn’t tell them why I needed to get away from the place.  I just knew that if we hadn’t gotten out of there, something terrible was going to happen.
As soon as I turned onto the Westside Highway, a loud explosion got our attention.  While we waited at a red light, hoards of fire trucks and police vehicles raced back in the direction of the World Trade Center.
A few minutes later, my supervisor radioed, asking with urgency in his voice, about our status.  It wasn’t until a few days later, when I passed by the scene, that I realized the crater the bomb made was where I had parked the armored van.
I’m guessing my guardian angel did his best to get my attention.  Perhaps all my crew’s angels must’ve been shouting at me to get out of there.  All I know is that since then, I’ve learned to listen to my gut.
Believe me when I say that it pays to listen to the voices.  In that case, I didn’t hear them, but I sure felt them.
I’m only sorry that my prediction of an air assault on New York came true a few years later.  Though I must admit, I never dreamed terrorists would use commercial airliners like bombs.
I look forward to the day when we can put a stop to the madness.

Catch you on the dark side.

Nature's Warning: Earthquake Rocks East Coast

Nature’s Warning: Earthquake Rocks East Coast
By Nomar Knight

An ungodly rumbling caused more than the east coast to tremble.  The recent earthquake, which originated in Virginia, did more than disrupt everyone’s routine.  The blast of nature assisted in shedding light on the possibility of an extreme change for life as we know it.  What most people hate to admit, lies inside them, rose to the surface as many grew terrified of the possibility that the end of the world, or perhaps a catastrophic terrorist attack was at play.
Moments after the event, I received a call from a loved one.  I heard the fear in her voice.  The older a person gets, the more aware they become of their mortality.  At that moment, I was at a loss to find the words that would comfort her.
My mind wandered with the images she described, first of how she visited her brother and sat with her husband in a loveseat.  Their familiar encounter literally shaken as the building swayed, and their loveseat trembled.  Shock quickly transformed to sheer panic, and instead of looking to position over a doorway, or dive under solid furniture, they said their goodbyes and headed to the same place the majority went to, the crowded streets.
Images of concrete breaking open and swallowing people as they danced for their lives, doing their best to negotiate each new crater, popped in my mind.  As I listened to her tormented account, I envisioned skyscrapers collapsing all around them.  I felt hopeless when the best advice I could offer was for them to remain outside, away from buildings for at least an hour.
Perhaps my advice would have been useless if the situation were worse, but the one thing I do know from personal experience is that when our number is up, there’s nothing we could do to change the outcome.  Death waits for no one and eventually, will meet us all.
Nevertheless, I’m pleased that as of this writing, the situation did not get worse and that no one got hurt.  Yet I can’t help but wonder what the underlying purpose of the event could be.  Was the seismic event that got everyone’s attention just a prelude to the end of the world?
While the scientists look for answers, I’ll chalk it up to nature’s way of providing us with a wakeup call.  My advice, live life as if each moment is your last.

Catch you on the dark side

A Quiet Torment

A Quiet Torment

A Quiet Torment
By Nomar Knight

As a parent, I expect for life to at least run like a rollercoaster all the while praying that it maintains the “natural order” of things.  I can take it when life throws its serene moments, tender times, trying emotions, conflicting battles, and mournful losses.  However, I hope life doesn’t twist tragedy around until I’m left wondering if I spent the last few years walking on my head.  I expect for the person born before me to leave us first, so it disturbs me when a parent loses a child.  I’m a father of two and losing one of my kids is my biggest fear.  I expect to go first since I was born first, but of course; life doesn’t work that way.
Unfortunately, death isn’t the only way to lose someone.  Imagine losing that which is most precious to you because evil rears its ugly head and like a thief someone abducts your child.
Abductions occur often.  In 2010, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, 2,185 children were reported missing every day. About a third of the victims were abducted by family.  Significant small percentages were taken by non-family members.  Incredibly, out of close to 800,000 abducted children; only 115 were reported as a typical abduction, meaning the child was taken by either a stranger or an acquaintance for the purpose of ransom or with the intent to kill the child.
In my first eBook short story, Fountain of Death, Officer Victor Prospero lives the quiet torment of losing a daughter.  In Victor’s case, his teenage daughter was abducted on Valentine’s Day.  As is fairly typical, it was suggested to him that his daughter ran away from home, looking for a better life.
Once his own kind turns their back on him, his daughter’s disappearance takes its toll on his marriage.  Imagine how many nights Victor spends wondering if he was a bad parent.  He knows his daughter, Hope, and is willing to bet his life that she wouldn’t run out on the family.
I guess the silent killer in all this, from a morale standpoint, is the mystery of her whereabouts.  Not a moment passes when he begins to see her in every teenager with similar resemblance.  A quiet torment weighs heavily on our hero.  You feel sorry for him as his world slowly collapses into an abyss where evil thrives.
Could Officer Victor Prospero’s daughter be the victim of abduction?  Did she run away with a man?  Considering how many kids her age are taken and forced into the sex trade, it stands to reason he may never know his daughter’s fate.  But then again, never isn’t a word I favor.
Find the answers in my first eBook short story, Fountain of Death, and prepare for a chilling ride.

A Lesson Learned Through Torture

Torture

A Lesson Learned Through Torture
By Nomar Knight
Torture is the mechanism by which a false sense of justice spurs the avenger onto heights greater than sexual bliss.  While listening to a concerto of earsplitting screams, the master grooms his wretched foe an agonizing inch at a time until his body parts grow numb. – The Book of Tortured Souls
It takes a special kind of monster to bend the will of another.  As I discussed the allowance of torture for anyone who was found guilty of committing a heinous crime with today’s youth—tomorrow’s law abiding citizens— my jaw dropped.  Not only did these products of violent video games favor torture, but a few went as far as describing what they would do to sexual offenders who didn’t stop with the raping of children.  They understandably abhorred molestation of any kind and in their book, predators that also kill their prey; will meet a certain yet slow death.
I’ll never forget the look in a teen boy’s eyes when he described a proper punishment.  What started out as castration soon turned into a morbid game of skin the bad guy to a point they made it an art.  For these youngsters, one brutal act deserved payback of macabre proportions.  It wasn’t long before slicing and dicing amid horrid screams turned into burning and maiming.
After listening to them for several minutes, I asked, “What if it turns out they locked up the wrong man?  How would you justify your actions?  How do you give the guy his limbs back?  How could you look him in the eyes?  The word sorry would never cover your actions.”
The teens remained silent.  Perhaps some thought about their dark enthusiasm.  Some glanced at their feet, unable to look me square in the eyes.  The eager torturer tilted his eyes toward the heavens and whispered, “Torture should only be reserved for anyone who’s caught in the act or where it can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he’s guilty.”
The fact he didn’t want to abandon the notion of torture mystified me.  I wonder when we’ll stop to think how barbaric we have become as a society.  Even now as I sit in the dark, sipping my coffee, I think back at the teen’s cold eyes and wonder what our future will be like.  I hope society will not back itself into a corner and feel that in order to deal with real life monsters; they must become something far worse.
Tonight I was posed an interesting question.  What did I think was the best way to deal with terrorism?  Ironically, I answered that it starts with educating our citizens.  Perhaps if we teach the young ones to fight hate with love, the world may become a safer place.

See you on the dark side.

Shattering a Paradigm: Creating a Bad Good Guy

Since the beginning of time, the devil's minions hide in plain sight, chameleons of faith, and executioners of hope. - The Book of Tortured Souls, Nomar Knight

Watch out for the bad good guy! Sometimes it’s difficult to discern bad guys from good. In real life the identities aren’t always clear. It may be a trusted servant who turns against his master by torturing what’s most precious to him—his child. Perhaps a popular teacher, who’s entrusted with educating children so their trek into the world of academia could be smooth, goes beyond the call of duty and educates the student by crossing boundaries which may lead them both into moral dilemmas.

One of the most horrifying antagonists is the chameleon of faith that hides in plain sight. No, he doesn’t lurk in the shadows waiting for an opportunity to strike. He befriends his victims, constantly painting himself as the good guy who exudes righteousness, making him the envy of all unsatisfied with their own imperfections. Priests or men and women of the cloth were considered people who sacrificed personal comforts in order to serve others. Most perform their jobs well and maintain their authentic good guy status, but a few undermine the fabric of the prestigious position. So while it may be common place to hear about charges being filed against a Catholic priest or a pastor who got caught soliciting or performing “special services” deemed by their own religion as unacceptable moral behavior, fiction may illuminate the few infractions and cast an illusion that they are all enemies of society. Such a false assumption can leave many to brood about in the dark halls of ignorance.

What are sinners to think if their leaders fall to temptations of the flesh? The mere acts of betrayal to all they preach serve to remind their flock how week humans are. The power of temptation can bring the strongest of the faithful down to their knees, but not necessarily in prayer. The vulnerability of falling to the enemy can put a damper on hope.

Real life horror sometimes serves to inspire fiction. Writers enjoy tantalizing readers by mixing true events with unbelievable possibilities which may go beyond entertainment. Keep them guessing is a great formula for spinning a yarn. Another technique which may entertain is the art of illusion. It’s fun to lead readers to a logical conclusion and then pull the rug out from under them. Ah but one must be careful, for writers should not punch holes through their hypnotic bubble. Instead, they should try and immerse their readers into the worlds they create so when authors make the giant elephant disappear, readers may accept the twisty outcome as something amazing, yet wonderful and plausible for that specific world of fiction.

Betrayal of the most sacred kind when used properly in horror, may add an emotional dimension your characters can draw on to pack a powerful, realistic punch.

See you on the dark side.
