The Sixty-Year-Old Teacher by Brianna Feliciano

The Sixty-Year-Old Teacher by Brianna Feliciano

Sixty years, and still I stand,

Chalk trembling in my hand.

They laugh, they mock, they roll their eyes,

Lost in screens, deaf to the wise

I roar, I plead, yet still they stray

Drifting further, day by day

But then-- a spark, a sudden gleam,

A child who listens, and dares to dream.

And so I teach, despite the pain

For one bright mind is worth the strain.

From the Poet Princess: Haiku

Here are three Haiku poems written by a young teen I call the Poet Princess.

Amaia M. (13)

Autumn

Autumn leaves descend,

Drifting on the gentle breeze,

Nature's quiet grace.

Night

Moonlight on the lake,

Ripples dance across the waves,

Sweet tranquility

Spring

Spring blossoms unfold,

Petals softly kiss the air,

Nature's symphony

Trapped Inside by Nomar Knight

Trapped Inside  By Nomar Knight

Stuck on repeat, my mind's a cage,

Used to be bright, now filled with rage.

Darkness leaks out, a chilling tide,

Smiling feels forced, nowhere to hide.

Demons whisper, fueled by desire,

They claw at my soul, set my heart on fire.

Ripped open and left to bleed,

Evil planting its evil disgusting seed.

Memories flicker, love's faded glow,

Longing for peace, a place to go.

Dark birds circle, their eyes so cold,

Does anyone see the story untold?

Feels like the light's fading fast,

Questions unanswered, shadows cast.

Numbness creeps in, a chilling wait,

While circling vultures seal my fate.

The monsters howl, a symphony of dread,

Surrounded by darkness, left for dead.

The weight of the world, a crushing blow,

A lost soul with nowhere to go.

But wait...a flicker, a spark ignites,

A tiny flame pushing back the night.

Maybe there's hope, a chance to fight,

To break free from this endless night.

Do You Mindfulness? by Nomar Knight

Do You Mindfulness?

By Nomar Knight

When I was a kid, I was often told to mind my own business. Now, as an adult, I find myself learning about a life-changing tool called mindfulness. Essentially, mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment. Given that I grew up in bustling New York City, this task presents a unique challenge for me. However, I believe that practicing mindfulness can transform me into a more relaxed and productive version of myself.

As someone who struggles with anxiety, I prefer to avoid complicated techniques. That's why I appreciate that mindfulness encompasses a variety of practices, including meditation, yoga, and simply paying attention to my breathing and body sensations. Taking moments to slow down and shut out the distractions of the outside world is crucial for my well-being.

Over the years, I've noticed a pattern of negative thoughts that only exacerbate my anxiety. Focusing on any one thing for an extended period of time is a rare feat for me. With mindfulness, I hope to improve my ability to concentrate on tasks over time. Being self-aware of my reactions and behaviors will also be crucial in managing my emotions. Mindfulness promises to increase emotional regulation, which would benefit me greatly as a junior high school teacher. Though I typically maintain a cool demeanor, there are moments when my inner suspense writer wants to take over and handle situations in an action movie kind of way. Luckily, I've learned to leave those impulses to my fictional writing and rely on my charming personality in real life.

Strange Behavior by Nomar Knight

Strange Behavior

by Nomar Knight

Anxiety and depression have made me feel like a stranger in my own skin. My short-term memory isn't as sharp as it used to be, and I'm not sure if it's due to stress or the side effects of the Covid vaccine. I've noticed changes in my thought process and behavior, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to function.

Lately, I've been experiencing repetitive brain fog. I'll put items in the back of my car, only to stop on the side of the road to check if they're still there. What used to be a simple recall of memory now feels like a lit candle losing oxygen, struggling to stay alight. My mind feels clouded, and it's affecting my daily life.

Despite my passion for writing, my condition often leaves me feeling uninspired and unmotivated. It's as if my creativity is trapped at the bottom of a well, and I can't seem to access it. I long to craft interesting characters and embark on wondrous journeys, but my anxiety holds me back.

Procrastination is a constant battle for me, and my anxiety only exacerbates the issue. I know that I need to stick to a routine of writing, planning, and scheming, but it's easier said than done. I'll try to start fresh tomorrow, and hopefully, I can finally claim a victory over my procrastination.

Thoughts of a Crying Soul by Nomar Knight

Thoughts of a Crying Soul

By Nomar Knight

I feel lost in life and everything seems difficult, like crawling on glass. My pain leaves a trail of broken hearts, and I'm overwhelmed by the constant loneliness. Numbness spreads through my body, and I dread the thought of facing another day of torture.

I've become a creature of habit, afraid to leave the safety of my routine. I keep myself busy with mundane tasks and avoid anything that might awaken the beast within me.

During the day, I try to stay focused and avoid anything that might trigger memories of happier times. But at night, the past creeps in, and I'm haunted by thoughts of love and the life I could never have. I long for the touch of a loved one, but it only leads to more pain and misery.

A LONG KISS GOODNIGHT: THE RETURN OF EVIL by Nomar Knight

A Long Kiss Goodnight: The Return of Evil By Nomar Knight I wish I could tell you I escaped an unforgettable nightmare. My readers probably speculated that I had been on an adventure of a lifetime only to reemerge after a four-year absence. Perhaps, some wondered if the vampire Lorraina finally got her way and held me captive in one of her dungeons. The torture she had unleashed on so many of her victims would make anyone cringe from the brutality her warped mind conjured. So what particular carnage awaited me? The last time I set eyes on her, she had grown impatient. She used her sexual charm to entice me to write her life story. She parsed some of my blood and then forced me to drink hers. The side effects alone drove me insane. Visions of victims suffering her wrath and how she fed her massive ego still haunt my dreams. Screams! To this day, I wake to loud, unrelenting sounds of immense misery. But, eventually, the cries fade into a past I did not experience. Perhaps Lorraina’s victims cry out for justice. Maybe those lost souls want me to end her immortality, so they bombard my nights, revealing the fear that had consumed them until she mercifully ended their meager existence. I hate it when I see past events through her eyes. Now, I notice that I’m highly cynical toward my species. Suddenly shifting from pro-humanity to anti-people simply because Lorraina’s biased views corrupted my thoughts was sickening. But unfortunately, I recall one night when she compared humanity with demon excrement. As far as she was concerned, people are food. I growled, angry at how she contaminated my soul. My innate kindness faded with every pounding of the keyboard. My dark muse opened a window into a morbid world where life and death match our present reality. Sadly, this brings me to my current predicament–the plague. Lorraina had survived several of them, proving that being a vampire had benefits. As I hid in isolation, I watched the news of many lives lost to an invisible killer. At first, the misery of watching people die on a global scale made my skin crawl. I, like so many others, lost family members. The pain of never being able to talk with them again eats away at the fabric of positivity that flickers inside my soul. With all the constant changes surrounding humanity, I got inflicted with a different kind of disease, and the biggest reason for my antisocial existence–depression! The pandemic had taken a toll on–Wait! Movement outside my house distracted me. Then, a familiar figure appeared at my living room window. I couldn’t believe it. I exclaimed, “She survived again?” The vampire, Lorraina Sandoval, stood at the entrance of my home. My heartbeat exploded as she gently wrapped knuckles against the metal door. Beads of sweat cascaded on my skin. The intense humidity intensified. “Let me in, Nomar.” The way she said my name sounded like a tired mom singing a soft lullaby. Anyone oblivious to the monster outside would assume she was a high school kid. I opened my mouth to speak, yet not a sound came out. She gently knocked again. “Nomar?” Lorraina spoke in a monotonous tone. “Don’t you want to know why you’re still alive?” Thoughts about my fragile mortality rushed at the forefront of my mind, increasing my fear. “Let me in, darling.” Against my own will, my hands reached for the door, trembling like a soul preparing to jump into a pit of fire. © Copyright Nomar Knight 2023. Lifeless Soul by Nomar Knight

Lifeless Soul
By Nomar Knight

I'm a prisoner of my mind
No longer warm and kind
Darkness escapes my pores
Simple smile becomes a chore

The demons come from need
Gauging eyes until I bleed
Ripped my heart from my chest
Life's cruelest horror test

Play back old scenes of love
In search of peaceful doves
Black ravens caw and stare
And nobody seems to care

The end squeezes life dry
Never answering why
Nothing left but wait and die
While vultures circle dark sky

Sounds of hell hounds abound
Evil creatures surround
The final bill is due
Lifeless soul without a clue

Wait Till... by Nomar Knight

Wait till…
By Nomar Knight

Wait till they get a load of me.
They are blind fools you see.
While I hunt their vulnerable flock.
Letting them protect their stock.
It's the ninety-nine percent that goes.
Disappearing into the shadows.
Like fragile pieces of glass.
Family units out of gas.

Got to love technology at hand.
Distracts them like a marching band.
Too busy wasting their lives.
Living in monotonous hives.
While corporate greed steals their knees.
They fork up the extra fees.
Precious treasure slips through their grasp.
I squeeze every breath till the last gasp.

With morbid discovery comes shock and awe
Widened eyes and dropped jaws.
My masterpiece I gift to them.
Leave them guessing as to when.
Like frantic ants under attack.
They scatter about both front and back.
For death is pure certainty.
Wait till they get a load of me.

Fall Into My Darkness by Nomar Knight

FALL INTO MY DARKNESS
BY
NOMAR KNIGHT

Fall into my darkness and dare to live once more
Scream away the pain you hold in your core
Let me guide your soul through the abyss of love
Wash away tears as we soar up above

Fall into my darkness in eternal pleasure
Collectors of death and skull treasure
Abandon the chains of damnation
Passion will arm you with vengeful castration

Fall into my darkness and be free like me
Light's blinding glare collects its fee
Embrace the soothing moon and stars
Together we'll dance the world will be ours

Fall into my darkness and bask in our moans
We are more than just a collection of bones
With the world at your feet my goddess of night
Conquests-a-plenty with your forever dark Knight

Chronicles of a Tormented Teacher: Tests.

Chronicles of a Tormented Teacher

Tests

Lately, I've been designing tests that are like a serene field until the unprepared wander carelessly not knowing that it's all a minefield. Last week a few students blew up. While it served as a rude awakening for them, my suspicions were confirmed. We are cultivating a corrupt society. Sorrow crept inside me, yet I wielded the lesson like a sledgehammer. Better to die in my war than to live in a land where real terror dwells.
Consequences must be real. I know this, yet I did not push for suspension. Instead, I found solace in arranging a silent, quiet torment. I hand out rewards to those worthy of receiving them. For this semester, the wounded will lose out on that privilege.
Amazingly, the kids have noticed something different about me this year. Some don't like it. Perhaps they see an emptiness in my eyes, or an intolerance built by time. I'm trying to do my best. I learned many years ago from one of my great teachers that I should always do my best and let God do the rest.  While I try to walk in the light, I gravitate to darkness. It's who I've always been. Such a delicate dance between dark and light, fire and ice.
Ah well, I must rest. Maybe tomorrow the light will win. Maybe...maybe not.

Fractured by Nomar Knight

Fractured
By Nomar Knight

I smile to sell illusion
My laughter is all the rage
A mask hides confusion
Yet I'm stuck in a cage

Ready to keep busy
Maintain a quiet presence
Dark thoughts make me dizzy
Brought down by hard lessons

I'm fractured inside
And nobody cares
Feelings I do hide
So they don't all stare

Heart bleeds dry
Not like they notice
Can't see me cry
Got to maintain focus

I'm fractured inside
Yet I get up every day
Will the pain subside
Must be a better way

To hear her voice once more
Would mend these old bones
Fractured to the core
Always so alone

Each night I go to bed
With no one at my side
Soon I'll be dead
All fractured inside

Wipe it Away!

Wipe it Away!

By Nomar Knight

Wipe it away! Make sure to get it all.
Night becomes day. Mustn't take the fall.

Wipe! Wipe it away! The stains must come off.
Keep them at bay. Secrets revealed by a cough.

Wipe! Wipe! Wipe it away! Sweat mixes with blood.
Damn DNA. Don't be another dud.

Wipe! Wipe it away! They can't see what you've done.
Play another day. Go on a murderous run.

Wipe it away! Someone will come for you.
Maybe not today. Best stay out of view.

Consequences of Success

Consequences of Success

By Nomar Knight

There's a target on my back
Success launches a thousand knives
Steps become harder to track
Truth drowned out by lies

Become great at spotting hate
Evil glances as if to dismember
Be careful what you ask of fate
Failure is what they hope to remember

Don't satisfy ignorant fools
Take things to the next level
Incorporate new tools
Who cares if they see the devil

March to your own beat
Aggressively take what's yours
Golden throne your new seat
Desire and sweat open doors

And if you feel you had enough
That being amazing is bad
Stow a plan in your cuff
It's fun to make them all mad

When Love Bleeds

When Love Bleeds

By Nomar Knight

How can I take a chance?
To find a loving romance
When I know all too well
The pain takes me to hell
Like a vampire when he feeds
That's when love bleeds

Nothing but fallen prey
Don't know what to say
As if I'm stuck in my seat
Stinking of rotted meat
Like a zombie as he feeds
That's how love bleeds

I'm no necromancer
Can't get up to become a dancer
No coming back to life
As if my chest holds a knife
Like a ghoul when he feeds
That's when love bleeds

Wish I knew what to do
So I could move on too
But reality bites
Won't reach new heights
So as the monster feeds
That's when love bleeds

March forward I'm told
Try to be bold
Meet someone new
But they haven't a clue
Inside me it feeds
That's why love bleeds

Darkness for me Tonight

Darkness For Me Tonight

By Nomar Knight

I've been practicing letting you go
Ever since we said hello
The warm embrace that replaced words
Hearts beating like a thunderous herd
Watched what could be
Turned into it can't be me
A cruel fate dealt us a blow
How to cope I don't know

Fly be free from my love
Let your wings stretch from high above
No hope no joy only despair
Must pretend we no longer care
For the halls of echoes will bleed
If we wallow in love's greed
So fly away my angelic light
Only darkness for me tonight

Only darkness for me tonight
With clipped wings I cannot fly
Only darkness for me tonight
Tomorrow the sun may shine
The myth that you were mine
Reveals true darkness not light
Only darkness for me tonight
Only darkness for me tonight

Dead of Knight

Dead of Knight
By Nomar Knight

The wounds are too deep
Just want forever sleep
Suffocated by circumstance
Like I never had a chance

All the time we spent
Thought you were heaven sent
Emptiness claws and bites
Turned off all the lights

Looking for forever sleep
The pain cuts too deep
Though I tried my best
My soul can never rest

Walking dead upon the living
Filled with many misgivings
Surrounded by loss and gloom
The end came too soon

Nothing left but to drown in sorrow
For me there is no tomorrow
Good-bye my lovely light
All I see is the dead of night

Save My Soul

Save My Soul
By Nomar Knight

You crushed my heart and left me to die
An empty promise you made a lie
Told me you'd be forever true
Yet somehow I'm here without you

Come shake me out of this nightmare
Come show me you still care
Save my soul and shower me with light
Pull me out of hell's flames tonight

Like a dream you came into my life
We danced in rhythm like husband and wife
With you I flew and walked on air
Can't believe you don't really care

At least I know what hell feels like
Flames scorch skin with a hammer and spike
Never-ending screams expand the hole
Oh won't you please save my soul

Save my soul with your warm touch
The pain inside is like claws that clutch
Though some tell me to give time a chance
Can't help but know that we danced our last dance

The hurting will stop and the void will close
I will smile again though nobody knows
Every night I will pray to be made whole
Because an angel will come and save my soul

Some angel will come and save my soul
Please angel save my soul

Death's Playmate

Death's Playmate
By Nomar Knight

Trapped within hollowed walls
My cries forever binding
They swirled and squeezed
Against my chest
The sins were oh, so blinding

Her curled mane of crimson
Wrapped around a tiny neck
They swirled and squeezed
Her life away
This savior left not a speck

Guilt smothered sordid pleas
Stomping wails across my brow
They swirled and squeezed
Another day
Yet time escaped me somehow

Small corpses in a chest
Waiting for discovery
They swirled and squeezed
A mangled mess
Released by recovery

Evidence encaged me
Ghostly cries forever binding
They swirled and squeezed
Ending their breath
The curse began rewinding

Released to maim again
More victims lying in wait
They swirled and squeezed
For me to stay
Their dark princely playmate

The Hungry

The Hungry
By Nomar Knight

I have been called by many names. Feared by thousands. So many lives succumbed to my insatiable appetite. On a night like countless others, I strutted along the city streets among the multitudes of boastful creatures, each engulfed in his own miserable existence. My observation of the beasts while they played their games grew into a morbid fascination. Too bad they never knew that they’re struggles were pointless. They took their surroundings for granted and used each other for selfish gains. They inhabited a fruitful planet suited for my talents since strength was rewarded with the spoils of victory. The ruthless cretins conquered only to succumb to my fancies.
I followed Mr. Wonderful into a bar and grinned at how he exuded the utmost confidence. His brown hair barely combed to the right, fell into place as if he had commanded his body to follow his will. He sat at the bar like the world owed him everything. The young female bartender cooed as he whispered in her ear. She blushed and promptly fetched his drink.
Once Mr. Wonderful got what he needed, he turned and faced the patrons sitting at the tables and booths. He scanned the room like a lioness eyeing a field of antelope. He failed to notice the disappointment plastered on the bartender’s face. The temptation to reveal her good fortune passed as the hunger reminded me that I had to remain still and look unassuming.
Mr. Wonderful stepped off the stool and inched his way towards me. I pretended to see him for the first time and grinned as if in disbelief. The smug look on his face signaled that I was not worthy of the self professed titan’s presence, but I resisted a chuckle, knowing he played into my hands.
     “Is this seat taken?”
He lowered his glass toward the empty chair. Without uttering a word, I shook my head slightly, making sure my blond hair didn’t hide my face. He had no idea that we had spent an intimate night. There was nothing more revealing than peaking inside a man’s dreams.
He placed the drink on the red tablecloth and offered a hand. “Hi, I’m Armando.”
I smiled, careful not to flash my pearly whites and gently placed my hand on his.
He held on to it, leaned closer and whispered, “This is where you tell me your name, blue eyes.”
I giggled and shuttered, allowing him to feel my energy, knowing that he would take it as a sign of flattery. Experience allowed me to mask my intentions with expert precision.
     “I’m Karma.”
His eyebrows furrowed in surprise. Mr. Wonderful chuckled in a controlled manner, blocking the outside world from seeing his imperfections.
     “Were your parents hippies?”
His ignorance confirmed a millennium of pure inbreeding. His kind craved the hunt in order to feel superior.
“No, they were stockbrokers. Now I’m alone in the world.”
     I sounded sad and innocent.
The sparkle in his dark eyes confirmed my ability to push the right buttons.
“Do you want to get out of here, Karma?”
The hunger inside me released. Men like Mr. Wonderful could never get enough. They mistook it for pheromones of lust.
I rose from the chair and whispered in his ear, “Sure, but be gentle with me.”
We got in his blue Lamborghini where I let him feel every crevice of my body. We kissed and my hunger reached a fever pitch.
He said, “I want to be inside you.” He unzipped his pants.
I pretended to be helpless and said, “No, not here.”
“Come on, Karma! It’s dark here. There’s no one around. No one can see or hear us.”
     “But I’m nervous.”
He jumped on me, searched for panties, yet found none. Then he smiled, “Why are you fighting it, baby? You know you want this.”
I tried to meagerly push him off, but he was too big, too strong. I yelled, “I can’t because I lied to you.”
     He stopped. “Lied about what?”
I trembled as though completely helpless, looked away from him, and said, “My name isn’t Karma.”
He chuckled. “That doesn’t matter, baby.” He tried to force himself inside me. I lifted and flung him, smashing his back against the driver’s side window, cracking it.
     He screamed, “What the hell?”
“Allow me to introduce myself, Mr. Wonderful. I am The Hungry.”
His screams and his soul satisfied my thirst, for the night.
